Control for Electrospinning of Nanofibers

Nanofibers are useful in a variety of applications due to their large surface area to volume ratio, from biomedical applications of tissue
engineering to drug delivery, as well as for energy,  and photonics applications.  The electrospinning process provides an economical way to manufacture products for these applications; however, it requires better control of fiber properties and size.  We’re developing the first real time control system for this process using advanced real time imaging and measurement techniques.  Undergraduates will help develop both the hardware and software system as well as design and conduct experiments to both understand the process physics, understand the manufacturing issues, and develop the advanced control system.
