This laboratory is dedicated to research in high-temperature chemical and electrochemical processing of materials with environmental, energy and cost implications. Current projects include synthesis of value-added metals and alloys, decontamination/recycling of metals, and synthesis of fuel-cell materials for electrochemical power generation. The laboratory is equipped with a TG (CAHN) balance, on-line mass spec and infrared gas analyzers; conducts high accuracy, high-temperature ionic and electronic conductivity measurements in solids and liquids, high-temperature electrochemical extraction and refining of metals, and electrochemical characterization of electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Students also get hands-on experience in using a state-of-the-art-machine shop, powder processing facilities, foundry, microscopy (optical and electron), XRD and wet chemical analyses.
