Short Biography of Dr. Michael Carolan

Dr. Mike Carolan is the Senior Research Associate – Materials for Air Products and Chemicals’ Advanced Gas Separation Technology group.  He is currently responsible for the materials research and development for Air Products’ Ion Transport Membrane (ITM) Syngas and Ion Transport Membrane Oxygen technologies.  ITM Syngas program is currently engaged in a 3-phase, 9 year, $90 million development program that is funded by the DOE.  The ITM Oxygen program is currently engaged in a 3-phase, $85 million development program that is funded by the DOE.   His active research interests are in solid state ionics, ceramic fabrication, and electrochemistry.

Dr. Carolan is the author of the chapter on “Syngas Membrane Design and Scale Up” in the book Nonporous Inorganic Membranes.  Dr. Carolan has been granted 18 US patents in the field of ion transport membranes.  Dr. Carolan holds a BSE degree from Princeton University (1982) and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, (1987) both in chemical engineering.
