Boston University has numerous educational and research programs in the area of ‘Clean Energy and Environment’ in the College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Management. Research in the College of Engineering in this area is well known in the following areas: fuel cells, technologies promoting hydrogen economy, energy-efficient solid-state lighting, green manufacturing, bio-energy, and systems theory and network science applications to energy systems. The College of Arts and Sciences has the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies (CEES) which is known for its activities relating to the study of societal impact of technologies on energy and environment. The School of Management is engaged in activities pertaining to investment and adoption decisions, modifications of user behavior, and operations management of clean-energy technologies. Research in these areas is expected to address much of our present energy-related concerns and steer us to a better future. This is potentially a $60 billion dollar industry as estimated by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Massachusetts has the highest density of clean energy organizations of any state in the country, with more than 80 active organizations. Based on the current strengths and activities, Boston University is well positioned to steer the course of this industry and participate in the tremendous growth opportunity it presents.
