Title: Solid State Lighting - a Green Revolution under Way

The meteoric development of high brightness light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is setting the stage for a migration from traditional bulb lighting to solid state lighting (SSL). The efficiency, robustness and versatility of LEDs offer a transformation with profound economic, environmental and societal implications. In particular, SSL can significantly reduce our overall energy consumption, and bring more light to more people, especially in developing countries.  However the migration to solid state lighting is not a forgone conclusion, nor is it going to happen overnight. While all the technical hurdles are rapidly being knocked down, SSL still faces economichurdles and other barriers to entry that will take a while to overcome.
