Emerging Technology and Best Practices Seminar Series
Speaker: Dr. Stefan G. Hild (Bio)
Seminar Title: Sensor Networks: Emerging Solutions for the Enterprise
Ubiquitous computing research in IBM has recently embraced the new
area
of sensor & actuators research, an area which leverages the recent
emergence of "smart" and "wireless" sensors that combine the actual
sensing of physical properties with embedded processing
capabilities,
thus allowing local processing, filtering, and communications of
data
or alerts across IT network infrastructure, at much reduced
infrastructure cost. As a result, sensing technology is broadly
applied
and allows enterprises to monitor a wide variety of operational
parameters in real-time, and tying these readings into back-end
systems
that are then able to adapt their behaviors and augment the
enterprises' business operations in real time to changes in the
operational state of the enterprise.
In my talk I will review some of the key research activities in IBM
Research in this area, highlighting specifically the impact of technologies such as RFID, smart sensors, and UWB location detection
on
business processes, production efficiency, and asset optimization.
The
talk will also touch upon the security challenges posted both to the
individual enterprise as well as the economy as a whole.
