Emerging Technology and Best Practices Seminar Series

Thinking Small: Nanoscience and Engineering
Friday, October 29, 2004 9th Floor
The Photonics Center
8 St. Mary's Street
Boston, MA 02215

Host: Professor Soumendra Basu
Department of Manufacturing Engineering, Boston University

Nanotechnology is a growing field that is bringing a host of nanoscience and engineering issues to the forefront in industries as varied as semiconductor manufacturing, environmental control, and stem cell research. This seminar will bring together a distinguished set of speakers who will address important topics of interest in nanotechnology including molecular electronics, carbon nanotubes, self assembly of polymers, nanomechanics, imaging of physical and biological systems at a nanoscale, among others. This thriving area of research at Boston University is brought together by the newly formed Center for Nanoscience and Nanobiotechnology. Recent BU activity in the field includes development of biocompatible porous membranes for diabetes drug delivery, ultra sensitive evanescent waveguide sensors used to measure pathogens in the environment, and advanced microscopy techniques for subsurface inspection of integrated circuits. Here, interdisciplinary nanoscience and engineering encompasses diverse fields of materials science, surface science, physics, chemistry, engineering, molecular and cellular biology, biophysics, microfluidics, MEMS, and manufacturing.

Please join us on October 29 at the Emerging Technology and Best Practices Seminar, where a distinguished set of speakers representing academic and industrial researchers, startups and venture capitalists will address the state of the art in nanotechnology applications, and a panel will assess the market and technology investment in this rapidly advancing field.
