Emerging Technology and Best Practices Seminar Series

Speaker: Tod Riedel (Bio)

Title: Self-organizing, wireless sensor networks. Millennial Net

Self-organizing, wireless sensor networks have immediate utility in a variety of industrial, medical, consumer and military applications. A new IEEE wireless standard, IEEE 802.15.4, has been proposed to address the power, transmission distance and data rate requirements for devices in this space. With a lower power profile and lower data rate than Bluetooth, this technology presents a number of interesting challenges in its implementation. This presentation will discuss these challenges in the areas of battery utilization, device size and networking protocol, including network latency, node acquisition time, route discovery and message confirmation. The article will also provide an overview of the three general application classes for these devices (interval sampling, Òstore-and-forwardÓ and event driven) as well as the appropriate topologies in which this technology can be deployed (mesh, star and star-mesh hybrid) and the advantages/disadvantages of each. This presentation will also include a live, wireless sensor network demonstration.
