File and Print Server

servers-1MET IT provides File and Print sharing, storage and archiving services for all full-time faculty and staff of MET and SHA.

Please do not store social security numbers and other protected personal information when using any of the options below. If you work with this information, please contact MET IT to discuss appropriate options.

  • Every full-time faculty/staff user has a personal restricted “HOME” folder of 25 GB, to store regularly accessed job-related data, backed up daily. This folder is mapped as Drive H:
  • Every user can additionally request a personal “STORAGE” folder of 100 GB to store job-related data updated infrequently, backed up monthly. For those who requested it, this folder is mapped as Drive I:
  • Each department has a departmental shared folder accessible only by the department’s users, to store shared regularly accessed data, backed up daily. This folder is mapped as Drive K:
  • Each department can additionally request a departmental “STORAGE” folder accessible only by the department’s users to store infrequently updated shared data, backed up monthly. For those who requested it, this folder is mapped as Drive S:
  • Any additional restricted folders for use by cross functional teams with people from different departments can be created upon request. Please send requests to METIT@BU.EDU.
  • There is an unrestricted SHARED folder accessible by users form all MET departments for ad-hoc sharing of non-sensitive data (please remember to delete files in this folder when you no longer need them). This folder is mapped as Drive K:
  • All mapped drives/folders are automatically configured for every PC user at log in.

  • MET IT manages separate Data Archiving service hosted by IS&T.  It is designed for long-term storage of large amounts of infrequently accessed data. This archived storage can be used for experimental data, computational output, old images, video files, etc. Archives are not backed up, but protected from data loss by continuous replication between two data centers. Please contact METIT@BU.EDU to request this service.
  • MET IT manages BU-licensed Dropbox for Business accounts with virtually unlimited storage.  These individual accounts can be requested by emailing to METIT@BU.EDU.
  • Each department has at least one high speed networked printer shared by all users in the department. Printers are mapped for every user at the log in.
