Admissions and Eligibility

General Admissions Requirements

In order to be considered for the Master of Criminal Justice, applicants must have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. International students for whom English is not a first language must submit the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). For current information on the TOEFL examination, please visit www.ets.org/toefl. Please call 617 353 6001 for TOEFL score requirements. Students are expected to show good writing skills and strong professional reasons for pursuing this program. The case study method is based on interactive teaching, which necessitates a great deal of class participation.

Good Academic Standing

Students admitted to the Criminal Justice Masters Program must maintain an overall grade point average of 3.0 in each course to be in good academic standing and to graduate from the certificate program. No grade lower than B- may be used toward graduation requirements at Boston University. Faculty will work with students throughout the program to make certain that students are aware of their academic progress and any potential deficiencies.

Application Process

Online courses begin every 7 weeks; however you must apply to the program before you can register for courses. Applications are accepted on a rolling admissions basis.
Please submit the following materials::

  • Metropolitan College Application Form
  • Official transcript, or notarized full-sized copy of transcript, from college or university where bachelor’s degree was earned; must be sent in a sealed and stamped envelope to address below
  • Proof of English language proficiency for those who did not attend college in a country where English is the first language; original TOEFL® score must be submitted directly to address below
  • A current résumé
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A nonrefundable $70 Master's application fee (please make check payable to Boston University or complete a Credit Card Authorization Form)
