The first decades of the twenty-first century have seen a revolution in the creation of software applications. Rapidly declining communication costs now allow many selected applications to be produced via geographically distributed development, within and across national boundaries. In addition to the normal challenges of specifying and developing IT systems, distributed projects must
accommodate differing cultures, time zones, and development methodologies.
The Geographically Distributed Software Development certificate prepares students to justify, lead, participate in, and maintain such projects. Students study the technical and business implications of
software engineering in a distributed context. They also work in geographically dispersed teams to produce documented applications.
Credits earned in the certificate program can be transferred into the Master of Science in Computer Science.
Applicants to this program are required to have a bachelor’s degree and programming experience equivalent to MET CS 231 or MET CS 232, and MET CS 341 or MET CS 342. Some courses may have additional prerequisites.
