New Media &
the Marketplace of Ideas
Oct 26, 2007 at Boston University
The internet is radically transforming the media and restructuring the marketplace of ideas. The result: a wide range of challenging legal, business, and policy issues. Are blogs just another type of journalism, with all the rights of traditional media, or are they something different requiring greater controls? Do IP laws interfere with or facilitate new media? How should media businesses respond to the changing environment? Who will be gatekeepers for the new media?
On October 26, 2007, Prince, Lobel, Glovsky & Tye, the BU College of Communication, the BU School of Law, and WBUR co-sponsored a day-long conference: “New Media and the Marketplace of Ideas.” Featured speakers included Mark Jurkowitz (Project for Excellence in Journalism), Sherrese Smith (WashingtonPost.Newsweek Interactive), and Gigi Sohn (Public Knowledge). The keynote speaker was Markos Moulitsas of the Daily Kos, one of the most influential political blogs in the country.
