Giving Back to Mechanical Engineering

The College of Engineering has several funds that directly impact undergraduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, give here (please write in your selection under “Your Gift Designation”):

  • Mechanical Engineering Senior Project Fund
  • Merrill Ebner Funds
  • Engineering Annual Fund
  • Anita Cuadrado Endowed Memorial Fund

The Mechanical Engineering Senior Project Fund within the Department of Mechanical Engineering is used to support the activities of the Department’s senior capstone courses (including the mechanical, manufacturing, and aerospace capstones).  The ME Senior Project Fund is a discretionary fund that has been established to allow the Chairman of the ME Department to broaden the scope and impact of the senior capstone experiences.

The Merrill Ebner Funds support creative design and commercialization initiatives within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.  The Funds were established in 2003 by Roger Dorf, an alumnus of the Manufacturing Engineering program, and his wife Sandra.  The Merrill Ebner Funds have sponsored the annual Undergraduate Design Portfolio Contest, the annual graduate-level Thesis with the Greatest Commercial Potential Contest, as well as Design Fellowships that support Master’s students who spend part of their time enhancing the design component of a Mechanical Engineering course.  There are two sub-funds: the “Endowed Fund” receives contributions from which the accumulated interest is available for use; contributions to the “Current Use Fund” are available for use immediately upon receipt.

The Engineering Annual Fund (EAF) is a discretionary fund that allows the Dean to support a number of initiatives directly related to improving the undergraduate experience.  The EAF supports research for undergraduates through programs such as the Summer Term Alumni Research Scholars Program (STARS) and Supplemental Undergraduate Research Funds (SURF).  The fund also supports many student groups, including the BU chapter of Engineers Without Borders, the BU Rocket Team, the BU Mini Baja Team, and the BU Energy Club.  Additionally, the EAF sponsors Engineering Book Awards.

The Anita Cuadrado Endowed Memorial Fund was established in 1998 to honor the memory of Anita Cuadrado, who served as the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Students for the College of Engineering and was known for her warm and generous spirit.  The Anita Cuadrado Fund sponsors annual awards to one or more students in the College of Engineering who best exemplify Anita’s spirit, commitment to the College and Boston University, and dedication to helping undergraduate students.
