From materials theory to predictive materials design: One principal goal of condensed matter science is to understand the structural-property relationship of materials systems such that specific materials properties may be achieved via molecular design. This talk will be focused on two long-standing scientific problems. The first problem concerns fundamental understanding of the coupled opto-electro-mechanical properties in complex π-conjugated systems, with applications in the organic photovoltaics, artificial muscles, and nano-composite materials designs. The second problem is on probing the lifetime and aging processes of metastable phases including the nature of glass transition and plasticity carriers of amorphous solids, with applications in the metallic glasses and aerogel materials designs.
