Keith A Nelson: Acoustic and thermal responses on all length and time scales -- Optical methods have been developed to enable coherent excitation and time-resolved monitoring of many condensed phase degrees of freedom including acoustic phonons, optic phonons, and excitons in linear and nonlinear response regimes. Measurements of acoustic phonons spanning much of their frequency range in single crystals, nanostructured materials, glasses, and liquids will be presented and their implications for viscoelastic behavior and thermal transport in diffusive and ballistic limits will be discussed. Nonlinear acoustic and shock wave observations also will be illustrated.
