Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
FE Exam Registration Information for ME Students
Professional registration (licensure) is a step which many engineers pursue and which some jobs require (http://ncees.org/licensure). The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) is the first step toward registration. Most students take it either during their senior year or shortly after graduation. To encourage students to take the exam, the department reimburses a portion of the test fee.
- Next Examination Date: Saturday, October 26, 2013
- Registration Deadline: Thursday, September 5, 2013

Registration for the exam requires a notarized application. Notary services are available at no charge to BU students (usually Monday through Friday, 1 - 5 p.m.) from Joe Precopio, ENG Program Coordinator, ERB B-15, 44 Cummington Place. To set up an appointment, e-mail Joe at email@example.com. Be sure to say in your e-mail subject and body that the appointment is for the FE Exam. You should call Joe before going over to be sure he is around: 617-353-5949. In order to have your form notarized, you will have to present a picture id that also contains your signature.
Changes for 2014: Beginning in January 2014, the FE in Mechanical Engineering will be offered year-round during specified windows: January-February, April-May, July-August, October-November. See Computer Based Testing for further information.
The Mechanical Engineering Department will reimburse you for $100 of the $189 exam fee. In order to receive reimbursement you will have to supply:
- a written confirmation of receipt of payment (showing amount) by the testing service
- a copy of the letter from the testing service informing you of the test results
- FE Exam Reimbursement Form
You will be reimbursed whether or not you pass the exam, but you must submit the letter giving the result, whichever it is.
Confirmation of payment can be a copy of your credit card statement (showing name, but not account number) or a copy of your certified check or money order. Scoring and notification of results may take several months, and reimbursement will take place only after test results and proof of payment have been received.
The results letter and the confirmation of fee payment and must be sent at the same time to:
Department of Mechanical Engineering
110 Cummington Mall
Boston, MA 02215
Reimbursement may occur several weeks after graduation. So for your own sake, include your:
- e‑mail address
- telephone number, and
- a valid mailing address to which you want the reimbursement sent.
Requests for reimbursement (with accompanying paperwork) must be received by December 1 of the year in which you take the exam.
In past years BU ASME has sponsored a short review course for the FE exam on a weekend shortly before the April exam. With the new year-round test schedule, ASME may choose to adjust its plans.
