Entering PhD students are funded in their first year through:
- MEF (Mechanical Engineering Fellow)
- RA (Research Assistant: funded directly from individual faculty member’s research grant)
- External Fellowship (more information below)
During the first year, MEFs have to pursue research and funding discussions with the research faculty. At the end of the first academic year, MEFs must move to RA funding, while others continue on their external fellowship if applicable.
Specific information for international students: http://www.bu.edu/eng/admissions/grad/international/
Graduate students are encouraged to seek out external funding for their research such as :
- Hunt Fellowship (ASA)
- NSF Fellowship
- DOD Graduate Fellowship
- DOE Graduate Fellowship
- NIH Fellowship
- NASA GRSP
The ME faculty are willing to work with students to develop the necessary research statements for these types of fellowships. Many of these are due in December or January. Thus they are more feasible for students who are already studying in our program. More information can be found at http://www.bu.edu/eng/admissions/grad/financial-aid/
MEng Applicants: A limited number of merit-based scholarships are available.
- RA (Research Assistant: funded directly from individual faculty member’s research grant), this is very rare.
- External Fellowship
