Master's Degree Curriculum Requirements
There are two types of MA programs available to MA students:
- Scholarly Review Paper. Students select a topic in consultation with a faculty advisor from the MCBB Program. Two MCBB faculty members must read and approve the final version of the paper.
or
- Research Thesis. A thesis on original research conducted under the direction of a sponsoring faculty member must be read and approved by a committee of three faculty members, which includes at least two faculty members from the MCBB Program; one committee member must be the faculty member who acted as the research advisor.
Both of the types of MA students are required to take the same core courses, which consist of the following:
Required Core Courses (24 credits total):

BI 622 Biochemistry II (4 cr)

BI 583/584 Progress in Cell & Molecular Biology (2 cr, 2cr)

Other courses/credits to a total of 32
As part of this total of 32 credits, Scholarly Review Paper-based Master students are also required to take:
MB701/702 Graduate Readings in MCBB (2cr/2cr).
Research-based Master Students are also required to take as part of the total 32 credits:
Eight credits selected from the menu of Elective Courses or enroll for research credits under their advisor (MB907/908). Students who are seeking this form of Master’s degree may not take BI 701/702 for credit toward graduation.
