ut
years of constant use coupled with the effects of the harsh New England
weather took its toll on the Plaza. The bluestone installed nearly five
decades ago was cracked and crumbled, and rust stains had colored the
pedestal of "Free at Last," the soaring sculpture erected in
memory of Dr. King in 1975.
The class of '94 took the first step to restore the physical condition
of the Plaza, designating its class gift to the project. Recently, more
alumni joined the cause, and a concerted effort has been completed to
revitalize the heart of our University. Together we have met the challenge
of this more than one million dollar project, giving Marsh Plaza a dramatic
new look and preserving it as a crossroads and meeting place for generations
to come.
