Playing Sports in Madrid

Here in Madrid, you will find that Spaniards are big aficionados of all kinds of sports. Below you will find information about where you can get in on the action.

Running

Madrid 5k and Half Marathon

BU students at the Madrid 5k and Half Marathon (April 2011).

One of the best ways to get to know a city is via running. Luckily, Madrid is  blessed with many great running parks, and if you’re into races (5k, 10k, half & full marathons), there are events all year round.

One great way to start hitting the pavement is by joining a running group. In the past, students have run with Deportistas Solidarios, a Madrid-based non-profit foundation whose mission is to get people involved in sports and to raise money for charitable causes. Monday through Friday, the group meets in Retiro Park for a group run (ranging from a light jog to more serious training, depending on what members are looking for). If you’re interested, click on the link above, register (it’s free) and join the group “International Runners“.

Where to Run in Madrid

Retiro Park
Parque del Retiro

Known as los pulmones de la ciudad (“the city’s lungs”), Retiro Park is one of Madrid’s most frequented running hotspots located in the heart of city. Runners frequent the park at all hours of the day. Moreover, if you like to people-watch while you run, this is the place to do it. You’ll see everything from families out on an afternoon stroll to book fairs to clowns and street performers. And it’s not just for tourists. Madrileños are very fond of the park as well and make good use of its well-kept grounds.

With literally endless paths to choose from (and lots of challenging hills to throw in at your disgression), Casa de Campo is the ideal place to run if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
