In all the years I've been leading these, I don't think there ever has been a Lutheran Campus Ministry Spring Break trip that's this much fun—and certainly not this much warmth! This year, we're headed to Puerto Rico for a service project along with students from and a university congregation near Penn State. We'll stay at a Lutheran camp in Dorado Saturday-Thursday. Sunday, after worship at San Marcos in Guaynabo, we'll explore in Old San Juan. Monday-Wednesday will be super early days for our service project: painting San Marcos Lutheran Church. Each day we'll finish about 2pm, though, so that there can be relaxing times (beach!), fun and worship with other college students from Penn State and from Puerto Rico. Thursday features a day exploring El Yunque Rain Forest.
On Friday the 10th, we'll fly to Washington DC to take part in the Ecumenical Advocacy Days for Global Peace with Justice. Young adult tracks (as well as focus groups on regional or topical concerns) will help us make the most of giving voice to what we've seen. For this part of the trip we'll stay at the Crystal City (VA) Doubletree Hotel. Lobbying on Capitol Hill on Monday is an option for those who can stay. Otherwise, folks are returning to Boston by air on Sunday night.
The cost of this trip is more than $1250—but a generous grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans cuts that at least in half (maybe even in a quarter!). Cost will depend on exact numbers of who is going and whether the BU undergraduate fee helps kick in some money, too. Additional costs will be personal spending money, breakfasts in Washington DC (two mornings), and ground transportation to/from Boston's Logan Airport. For those who seek the financial assistance from Thrivent, there will be expectations that you participate in some pre- and post-trip meetings, write a short (1-2 page) paper about what you experienced, and share your stories with one or two church groups before the academic year ends.
For those who have previously attended an alternative spring break with Lutheran Campus Ministry at BU, a deposit of $300 is required by February 1 at 10pm. For those who have not, two deposit checks are required: one for $300 which will be cashed immediately, and one for $300 which will be held as deposit on your airfare and returned to you when we leave for Puerto Rico. Mail all checks to me c/o University Lutheran Church: 66 Winthrop Street, Cambridge MA 02138. Make the check payable to Lutheran Campus Ministry at BU.
