COMMUNITY ASSISTANTS (OPEN SUMMER & FALL 24 )

Seeking: 2 per semester

OVERVIEW: The Community Assistants serve as role models, peer advisors, resource and referral agents, and friends to students. In this position, the Community Assistants are an extension of the provision of services and sphere of influence of full-time BULA staff. Because BULA students do not live in dorms, but in multiple separate apartment residences in a large apartment complex, this position varies in some aspects from on-campus assistants.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with BULA staff, other student employees and BULA students on housing, student event planning, and student welfare issues.
  • Assist with student Move-In and Orientation Week duties.
  • Plan a minimum of one “official” social event per month.
  • Respond timely to student questions.
  • Troubleshoot student apartments’ internet and cable issues.
  • Assist with the Move-Out process at end of semester and post-Move-Out apartment inspection and restocking (CAs MUST stay at least 5 days after regular student departure date to finish Move-Out duties).
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
  • Assist BULA staff with event preparation for BULA-sponsored events and other miscellaneous program and housing issues as needed.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: CA candidates must be detail-oriented, have a passion for organization, display compassion and empathy along with maturity and a sense of responsibility. You should consider no job too small and be a self-starter. Candidates must also be excited to share the BULA experience with his/her classmates. Previous experience as an RA is preferred but not required. Internet and cable troubleshooting experience preferred, but not required. Due to the varying hours required throughout the semester, with a majority of the work at the beginning and end of the semesters, CAs need to be adept at balancing their internships and academic duties with their CA duties.

REQUIREMENTS:

CAs are required to arrive at least a day before Check-In to assist with last minute preparations and Check-In. CAs are required to stay at least 5 days after the other students depart to complete the Check-Out process. CAs are required to stay in LA and work all day from Monday through Friday of the week after checkout and may depart on Saturday or Sunday. Housing during the extended stay will be provided.

CAs are also required to be able to assist with a task with short notice if necessary and stay in communication with the BULA office in case of an emergency or urgent task. Therefore, CAs are required to have their own laptop and smartphone (or at least access to email on their phone) throughout the entire duration of the semester.

CA COMPENSATION: $3,255 for the entire semester, paid out in weekly installments. (Monetary compensation only. Housing is NOT included. Single Rooms are NOT included.) Please note the actual hours of work each week vary throughout the semester, with the first and last few weeks of the semester being the busiest.


MEDIA ASSISTANT (OPEN SUMMER)((NOT APPLICABLE FOR FALL 24)

Seeking: 1 for Summer 24

Job description: This student job requires participation in all mandatory and optional events during the BULA semester. The Media Assistant will take photos and video interview “snippets” of students during events and around LA. The snippets should focus on career opportunities, social events, and daily BULA life. This media will be used for marketing purposes by both BULA staff and Study Abroad staff. This is a semester long position. The Media Assistant will be “comped” any entrance fees.

MEDIA ASSISTANT COMPENSATION: $2,000 stipend for the entire semester. Paid out in weekly installments.


TECH ASSISTANTS (OPEN FALL24)(NOT APPLICABLE FOR SUMMER 24)

Seeking: 4 per Fall & Spring Semester

OVERVIEW: Tech Assistants work directly with instructors, and occasionally with BULA staff, to assist with audiovisual, computer, or other technical needs in classes. BULA will employ one Tech Assistant per night (Monday through Thursday), and the assistant will typically begin work 30-60 minutes before classes begin and remain available until all classes conclude. The position will be done primarily from the BULA office suite, but the assistant may also be required to assist with offsite or remote classes, as well as occasional BULA-sponsored events. Tech Assistants generally work around 3-5 hours per week and can only work on nights they are not enrolled in classes.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Check classroom projectors and other A/V equipment before classes begin to ensure equipment functionality
  • Assist instructors during class time with A/V set-up or troubleshooting
  • Coordinate with instructors in advance of class, in the event of atypical A/V needs
  • Communicate with BULA staff, in the event of missing or dysfunctional equipment, or instructor requests

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: Tech Assistants should be organized, technically adept, and resourceful. Classroom A/V equipment is not uniform, so the assistant will need to be comfortable learning multiple systems. Good time management and calm under pressure are a must. Please highlight any specific A/V or related technical experience in your cover letter.  

TECH ASSISTANT COMPENSATION: $1,085 stipend for the entire semester. Paid out in weekly installments.


TEACHING ASSISTANTS (OPEN FOR FALL24)(NOT APPLICABLE FOR SUMMER 24)

Seeking:  1- 3 Fall & Spring Semesters

OVERVIEW: TAs work directly with professors, and occasionally with BULA staff, to assist with class preparation and execution. (Students can only TA for classes in which they are enrolled for credit). If a TA is selected for a course with limited enrollment, they will be guaranteed enrollment in the course. TAs work and get paid for time spent “on call” during class and doing any work-related duties before, after, and outside of class. They are also required to assist with BULA-sponsored events. TAs generally work around 3-5 hours per week per class, including class time.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as liaisons between professors, guest speakers, students and BULA staff via phone or email.
  • Track class attendance.
  • Coordinate transportation for student field trips.
  • Ensure technical A/V equipment functionality.
  • Make photocopies.
  • Assist BULA staff with event preparation for BULA-sponsored events and other miscellaneous program issues as needed.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:  TA’s must be organized, adept at balancing a busy schedule with their work duties, and possess good oral and written communication skills. Experience with A/V equipment preferred, but not required. Please highlight any specific knowledge of A/V equipment on your application.

OFFICE ASSISTANTS (NOT APPLICABLE CURRENTLY)

Seeking: No Office Assistants for Spring, Summer & Fall (if this changes we will inform students)

OVERVIEW: Seeking students to work in the BULA office (open M-F, 9-5). Ideal candidates are available to work 1-2 workdays (full day shifts) per week. The below is a general description of the types of tasks assigned to the different OA positions. Actual hours and types of tasks assigned will be dependent on the amount and type of work available throughout the semester, the students’ specialized skills, and the students’ schedule/availability.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support of general program administration tasks.
  • Handling incoming calls and other communications.
  • Helping organize and maintain office common areas.
  • Greeting clients and visitors as needed.
  • Maintaining supply inventory.
  • Updating paperwork, maintaining documents and word processing.
  • Assist BULA staff with event preparation for BULA-sponsored events (printing name badges, ordering food, setting up classrooms and other tasks).
  • Creating, maintaining, and entering information into databases.

If you  have expertise in the following areas below- please note in your cover letter:

Social Media:

  • Assist with BULA marketing campaign through use of social media outreach via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Assist with preparation of BULA weekly LA-Based Events Newsletter by researching current events and selecting, manipulating and integrating media
  • Design and graphics capability highly preferred. Experience with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, MailChimp (or other mass emailing providers), and PhotoShop strongly preferred, but not required.

Post-Production & Technology:

  • Edit BULA event footage into archival footage and short clips for social media, assist with A/V equipment set up and issues, including still and video (HD) cameras, audio systems, projectors, and DVD players and receivers.

Research:

  • Assist with research projects on internship opportunities and strategic partnerships with internship providers/companies in the entertainment and media industries to help keep BULA a relevant and dynamic program and obtain an understanding of key influencers in the entertainment and media industries.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: Office Assistant candidates must have a passion for organization and an eye for detail. You should consider no job to small and be a self-starter. Positive attitude a must. Strong knowledge of Excel and prior experience in an office environment preferred.  Please highlight any office experience and/or experience with Excel, WordPress, MailChimp, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram or any other relevant computer programs and A/V & tech equipment as described above on your resume.

OA COMPENSATION: $15.00/hour.  Maximum 14 hours per week. Each workday is approx. 6 hours (approx. 10-4 with a lunch break). Once a weekly schedule is set at the beginning of the semester, OA’s are scheduled to work the same weekday(s) each week.
