Results of ALSC Election for 2009 Vice-President

Christopher Ricks, at the request of the Secretary-Treasurer, forwards this information to you.

May 2, 2008

Dear President Ricks,

Pursuant to the bylaws of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics, which give the Secretary of the Association the responsibility for conducting all elections, I have conducted an election for the incoming vice-president for 2008-2009. Ballots were sent out to membership on April 1, with a deadline for return of May 1. On May 2, I counted all ballots properly received for the election for incoming vice president of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics. Office staff was present and checked my count.

860 ballots were sent out to active members.

391 ballots were returned.

4 were spoiled, or otherwise unreadable.

47 were cast for Professor Gary Saul Morson.

340 were cast for Professor Susan J. Wolfson.

Therefore I certify that Professor Susan J. Wolfson is the winner of the election.

I further certify that the election was under my control at all times.

In particular I certify: that I am fully responsible for the language of the ballot, which was drafted under my direction and with my approval; this ballot referred by incorporation to the qualifications of the two candidates;

that pursuant to the publicly posted bylaws and privacy policies of the Association no one, including other officers of the Association, had access to the Association's mailing list or the information it contained but the Executive Director, appropriate office staff and me, i.e., that at no time was either candidacy given access to such lists;

that on April 7, when (in response to an inquiry from one of the candidacies) an offer was made to provide both candidacies equal access to the membership (an offer neither candidacy took up), 62 of the 391 ballots had been received.

I would be grateful if you would communicate these results to members in an appropriate fashion.

Respectfully submitted,

William Flesch

Secretary-Treasurer of the Association of Literary Scholars and Critics
