Christopher Maurer (Boston University): “Yo no soy yo”: American Poets and the Spanish-Speaking Muse
In the late 1950s and early 60s, poets from the U.S. search for a new sort of Muse – the Mother of Roots or whoever the hell she is who gets into Whitman, Trakl, Neruda, Lorca, Char, Michaux? (In the words of James Wright.) Drawing on the letters of poets and publishers, this talk focuses on a moment when poets and critics discover, and try their best to assimilate, the “roots and wings” of Spanish and Latin American poetry.
