CAS LX 522 Syntax I
Schedule of events.


Below is the current plan as to how the semester will proceed (although there may be some changes as the semester proceeds). How to read this table: The Homework and Reading columns list when homework and reading assignments are announced; the readings should be done before attempting the homework, and the homework is due at the following class meeting unless otherwise noted. Readings and exercises marked CMG are from Chierchia & McConnell-Ginet, readings marked S are from de Swart. Homework assigned on Thursdays is to be turned in on the following Tuesday; homework assigned on Tuesdays will be discussed on Thursday but will not be turned in.

Also: commentary about tomatoes (but note that there is a typo: The Supreme Court case they allude to was in 1893 not 1883: Nix v. Hedden, 149 U.S. 304 (1893)). You might consider to what extent (and in what circumstances) it matters whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable. What's the significance of the "technically" part of "technically a fruit?" Does the word "fruit" mean "whatever the botanists categorize under the label 'fruit'?" To what degree is "fruit" like "positively charged ion"? What if the botanists had picked the name 'tiurf' for the class of 'fleshy or dry ripened ovaries of a plant, enclosing the seed or seeds'? Any particular reason they had to call that class 'fruit'? Does the word 'fruit' exist apart from botany?
