Outline

A. Introduce the concept of intellectual property. Discuss copyright , the law enacted to protect authors, inventors, artists.   Discuss the evolution of copyright law and the extensions and revisions to copyright law. Information as a commodity.

B. Introduce the concepts of intellectual freedom, the need for an educated public with access to information . Discuss fair use , the limitation to copyright which provides an exemption for educational purposes. Discuss the Freedom of Information Act . Information as a public good.

C. Balance between information as a public good and information as a commodity; between the rights of copyright holders and the public commons. Creative Commons .

D. Introduce the concept of plagiarism and the idea of inadvertent plagiarism.   Discuss the Net Generation characterized by digital literacy and the ease of cutting & pasting. Give examples of plagiarism- quoting or paraphrasing someone else's idea without citation or credit.

E. Introduce the concept of the Right to Privacy, how individual are protected by the Constitution. Discuss research and Institutional Review Boards .
