Date Of Meeting: Thursday,
4/20/06
Present: Tom, Tracy, Erin, Linda
Next meeting: Tuesday, May 2, 1-3, at PERL
Action items
Each of us selected one of the first four Project SAILS skill sets to
develop into an outline of what that section of the module will cover.
We'll post these outlines ahead of time if they're ready, otherwise we'll
bring copies to the meeting on Tuesday.
Skill Set 1- Developing a Research Strategy (EM)
Skill Set 2- Scholarly Communication/Structure of Disciplines (TC)
Skill Set 3- Identifying and Distinguishing Among Types of Sources (LP)
Skill Set 4- Selecting Finding Tools (TTH)
Summary of meeting
Before the meeting, Tracy sent us the results of a search she had conducted
about Libraries, Distance Education, and the learning environment, styles,
and needs of students taking distance ed courses. Many of these articles
are available in BU's collection either electronically or in paper. These
articles should be useful in our discussions and in the development of
the module.
At the meeting, we reviewed the Project SAILS Skill Sets and agreed that
they would be a good starting place for developing an outline of the module.
Some of the Skill Sets might be combined. We decided to tackle the first
four as a way to begin. We will wrap in, as appropriate, information about
library services, resources, and locally important information. We will
be creating a PowerPoint for the instructional designers to work with,
however we do not all need to work in PowerPoint.
Eldon Strickland and Linda had discussed the time frame. In order to have
the module ready for September courses, the Library should have the content
ready by the end of June. The content should include a detailed outline,
text, and any charts or simple graphics which the Instructional Designers
can work with to develop flash animations or objects. At the end of June
we'll schedule a meeting of the Library's implementation team with the
DE Instructional Designer assigned to this project. At this meeting we'll
develop a course map, which will lay out what needs to be done, by when,
and by whom.
Agenda for 5/2 meeting:
1. announcements, changes to agenda
2. discussion of the first four sections
3. Questions:
a. Should we be explicit about
the objectives of this library module?
b. What do we want to accomplish in the meeting with reference staff scheduled
for 5/3?
c. How can we ensure that staff have an opportunity to contribute to the
development process? In addition to Mugar & Branch staff, should we
be including staff from Law/Theo/Med?
d. Should we be soliciting input from Distance Ed learners at this point
on what they need? (At the IAC meeting on Wednesday, 4/19, Mary Nicolini
and Erin mentioned that they've kept track of questions their branches
have received from DE students.)
Note:
We've started tracking the work of this group on the web.
