Abstract: National University Library began a 12-month journey in
2002-2003 to undergo an intensive self study. It involved the entire
central library staff as well as the regional librarians in the Library
Information Centers, student and faculty focus groups, staff, and
library peers. The outcome of the self study is a strategic plan that
identifies mission, vision, goals, and objectives that will strengthen
the Library's role as a decisive force of National University's
graduates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Title: The Virtual Patron.
Authors: Moyo, Lesley M.1 lmm26@psu.edu

p185-209, 25p

Abstract: The modern academic library is characterized by
technological innovation, optimum Internet connectivity, and boasts of
numerous electronic resources and services that are accessible remotely.
Library patrons can now `visit' the library and conduct research without
ever entering the library building. Furthermore, enabling technologies
have led to the exponential growth of distance education programs in
many higher education institutions. Students can now participate in
college and university programs without leaving their geographical
locations because technology facilitates virtual delivery of academic
programs. This has in turn led to the emergence of virtual academic
communities. These virtual communities require the services and
resources of various academic support units much in the same way as
traditional campus communities. In order to remain relevant within this
milieu, academic libraries are changing rapidly and being transformed to
meet the changing needs of the evolving academic communities they serve.
To that end, libraries are increasingly providing services and support
to virtual patrons, by facilitating access to and navigation of
electronic resources and providing value-added support services that
optimize effective use of these resources. The public service areas that
have undergone the greatest technology-enabled transformation to meet
the needs of virtual patrons are access, reference, and instruction. As
technology changes, it will continue to define the capability of
libraries to meet the changing needs of library patrons. This paper
reviews some of the recent developments in electronic access, reference
and instruction in light of services to virtual patrons, particularly
college and university students. The paper focuses on virtual patrons in
an academic setting and includes results of a survey on the perceptions
and use of Web-based library resources and services by students of Penn
State University's World Campus, a virtual campus with an... [ABSTRACT

Title: Got Distance Services? Marketing Remote Library Services to
Distance Learners.
Authors: Fisk,

Summey, Terri Pedersen, sunimeyte@emporia.edu
Source: Internet Reference Services Quarterly; 2004, Vol. 9 Issue 1/2,
p77-91, 15p

Abstract: Distance learning students may not think of the "campus"
library as the first place to fulfill their information needs and may
not even be aware of the services available to them. One way to reach
these students is to adopt and adapt marketing techniques from the
business world. This article examines the findings of a survey conducted
at Emporia State University concerning the awareness of distance
learning services. It will also examine marketing techniques and
illustrate how they can be applied to increase awareness of reference
support services for distance learners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Title: Academic Librarians and Distance Education.
Authors: Gandhi, Smiti1
Source: Reference & User Services Quarterly; Winter2003, Vol. 43 Issue
2, p138-154, 17p

Abstract: The phenomenal growth of distance-learning programs at
colleges and universities has tremendous implications for providing
library services to distance students. Academic libraries are trying to
meet the accreditation requirements for providing "equivalent" library
resources and services to on-campus students and distance learners. This
article reviews the literature and presents an overview of
distance-learning services offered by academic libraries. The impact of
distance-learning and accreditation requirements on the work and roles
of academic librarians is explored, and shifts in the roles of
librarians serving distance learners and educators are discussed. The
focus is on examining additional responsibilities, opportunities, and
challenges encountered by academic librarians in serving distance
learners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Authors: Drabenstott, Karen Markey1 karen.drabenstott@umich.edu.
Source: portal: Libraries & the Academy; Oct2003, Vol. 3 Issue 4,
p601-613, 13p

Abstract: Interactive multimedia may be the solution to the
problem of transitioning from face-to-face learning to learning in an
online networked library environment. The article presents library
educators at four academic libraries using distance-education
technologies to learn how to design and build web-based interactive
multimedia sites for library-user education. They will then test library
users before and after using these multimedia sites to determine whether
interactive multimedia is an effective approach to teaching library
users about library research.

can help even more.
Authors: Kazmer, Michelle M.1 kazmer@lis.fsu.edu
Source: Electronic Library; 2002, Vol. 20 Issue 5, p395-400, 6p

Abstract: Distance education students have unique needs from
library services. This paper reports on a study of 17 distance learning
students and describes what they say they need and want from the
library. In talking to these distance students over time, we learned
what general kinds of factors help them in their learning experience.
Some of these are specifically related to library services, while some
are more general but can be applied to the library. They range from
changes in the provision of library materials and interpersonal services
to large-scale integration of the library with distance learning
infrastructure and the governing institution as a whole. [ABSTRACT FROM
