Borrowing and renewal

Individuals with a current Boston University “Terrier” card, a Boston University Alumni card, or a Boston Library Consortium card issued by a cooperating library are eligible to borrow library materials. Consult the table below for the loan periods and renewal options as they apply to borrower status and type of material.

    Books: 28 days, renewable
    Journals: Library Use Only
    Reserve: varies, please inquire at checkout. No renewal
  • Borrower:
    Graduate Students
    Books: 133 days,  renewable
    Journals (Staff only): 24 hours, no renewal
    Reserve: varies, please inquire at checkout. No renewal
  • Borrower:
    Books: 365 days,  renewable
    Journals: 24 hours, no renewal
    Reserve: varies, please inquire at checkout. No renewal

Please note that all checked out items are subject to recall at any time during their loan period.

Renewal – You may log in at any time using your BU login name and Kerberos password to review your library account, check the due dates of any material you have charged out, and renew materials yourself before they are due. You will not be able to use the self-renewal option if the item has been recalled by another patron, or if your record is blocked for any reason.

Note that renewal is possible only during the week before the due date.

Pre-Notices – A pre-notice will be sent to your email address three days prior to the due date of items checked out to your account. You must have a current email address listed on your library record to receive pre-notices. Please ask Circulation Desk staff to add or update your email address.

Fines and replacement charges

Open Stacks

  • $2.00 per day per overdue recalled item
  • $100.00 replacement charge per item (or cost of the item – whichever is greater)

Reserve Items

  • 2 Hour
    • $2.00 per hour per item
    • $150.00 replacement charge on the 3rd day overdue (or cost of the item – whichever is greater)
  • 1 Day & 3 Day
    • $10.00 per day
    • $150.00 replacement charge on the 3rd day overdue (or cost of the item – whichever is greater

    $30.00 processing fee (non-refundable) will be charged for all items that must be replaced.

    Holds and recalls

    If you see in the “Find in Library” tab that the book you need is checked out to another borrower, you may click on the “Request” link in Request Options to have it recalled. If you do not see the Request link, click the “You must sign in to get Request options” link. We will contact the borrower and ask that it be returned within 7 days (i.e. recall it) and notify you by email as soon as it is available.

    Storage retrieval

    The library houses over 40,000 volumes in storage consisting primarily of the early years of journals.

    Although off-site, material from the storage collection is readily available. You can request a copy of an article or the retrieval of a whole volume. Please sign in and click the REQUEST button next to the storage item. Paper request forms are also available in the library. Requests are filled daily Monday through Friday. Retrieved items can be picked up at the Circulation Desk after 5 pm. Call 353-3733 to check on the status of a request.
