System Requirements

  • Computer: PC with at least a Pentium processor and 150 MB of available hard disk space.
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher),  XP (SP1 or SP2), or Vista, with minimum 256MB RAM.
  • Monitor: SVGA color monitor (preferably set to 1024x768 screen resolution).
  • Printer: a high-quality graphics printer, e.g., laser or inkjet, is recommended.
  • Web Browser: Internet Explorer version 5 or higher, Netscape version 7 or higher, or Firefox. A web browser is needed to access full text, online help, and Internet resources within the Tools menu. Java, JavaScript and Cookies must be enabled for online help and some features within ChemPort. ActiveX must be enabled in Internet Explorer for ChemPort Reference Linking.
  • Adobe Reader version 5+ is needed to display PDF documents available via the CAS web site and ChemPort.

Downloading

  • Make sure you have a Temp directory/folder on your hard disk [e.g. C:\TEMP].
  • Click here to begin downloading the client.
  • You will be prompted for your B.U. login username and Kerberos password. [This is the same username/password you use on ACS.] Press the continue button, the download will begin.
  • You will be prompted to "run or save this file". Click save.
  • A "Save As" box will appear. In the Save In area at the top of the box, make sure your Temp folder is listed. In the File Name area at the bottom, the name will appear as sfs2007.exe.
  • Click on the Save Button. The file will be downloaded to your Temp directory.

  • Next, right-click here and from the popup menu and select "save target here" to download the site.prf file to the same Temp directory. [Firefox users select "save link as" from the popup menu.]
  • A "Save As" box will appear. In the Save In area at the top of the box, make sure your Temp folder is listed. In the File Name area at the bottom, the name will appear as site.prf.
  • Click on the Save Button. The file will be downloaded to your Temp directory.

Installing

  • Close all other programs.  If you have a previous version of SciFinder, uninstall it and reboot.
  • Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the TEMP folder where you downloaded the sfs2007.exe and site.prf files
  • Note: sfs2007.exe may appear as just sfs2007 if you have selected hide extensions for known file types in your FolderOptions View menu.
  • Double-Click on sfs2007.exe to start the installation program. When prompted for an installation directory, choose the default location [c:\sfschlr]. When asked to select a type of installation, choose Typical.
  • When asked "Do you have a disk labeled Custom Site Files" select NO.
  • When asked if you want to install the SciFinder toolbar select NO. The toolbar is added to Internet Explorer, but it doesn't add any functionality to SciFinder.
  • When the installation is complete, look in the TEMP directory where you downloaded the installation program. Copy the file site.prf from the TEMP directory into the installation directory [c:\sfschlr]. Launch the SciFinder client. It should automatically connect to the CAS database.
  • When you have verified that SciFinder is working correctly, move to the TEMP directory you used to download the installation program, and delete the files sfs2007.exe and site.prf.
