Don’t worry, your account isn’t really changing – it’s the way you access it that will. We are happy to announce that you will soon be able to log into your library account with your BU login name and Kerberos password.

All of the books you have checked out will be transitioned along with their due dates from the old system into the new one starting on Friday, Nov. 16 at 5pm and lasting through Sunday, Nov. 18. During this short time, sign-in, online renewals and e-shelf will not be working.

More Good News

As we upgrade the catalog management system in the coming weeks, you will see many improvements in BU Libraries Search, including

advanced and customizable request options, such as placing hold and recall requests online

seamless integration for the books you check out on your account and your eShelf in BU Libraries Search

improved metadata for all resource records, including databases, articles, ebooks and more

improved relevancy rankings and holdings displays for journals

Finally, our new system is much more adaptable than the old system, so that as future improvements become available, they can be implemented more easily.

In the spring of 2012, the Boston University Libraries surveyed BU graduate students to determine their use of and satisfaction with library services and resources. The response rate was over 30%, indicating that our graduate students care about our library system.

The survey responses have clarified some areas to improve and also suggest some strategic directions we will pursue, such as enhancing digital access to electronic journals. Here is a link to the Graduate Student Library Survey Report 2012.

This survey followed a survey of the faculty in the fall of 2010, and is part of a planned cycle of faculty, graduate student, and undergraduate surveys every three years. The Assessment Committee also uses other methods, such as focus groups and website statistics, to support data driven decision making in the libraries.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Linda Plunket (plunket@bu.edu).

Hogges, a former choir director and music teacher, brings both her practical and historical perspective to this diverse repertoire, which will be organized for easiest browsing and accessibility.
Above all, this is a community music collection in every respect. Coming primarily from the estate of Boston area music teacher and church musician Dr. Doshia Clara Mae Dockett (Ed. D, Boston University, 1982), its scope encompasses everything from classical oratorios and madrigals to show chorus, children’s sacred musical theatre, and gospel pieces. Many of the works are out of print and offer a historical glimpse into community music-making of generations past.

Notable examples include “Thirty Minutes in the Southland: A Musical Romance of the Ante-Bellum Period ,” a short and charming musical production published in 1940 and intended for community performers, and “It’s a Highway to Heaven,” a gospel song by Thomas A. Dorsey, considered to be the father of American gospel music. Today’s current a cappella stylists, alone, will find ample inspiration from all this that has gone before.

Many of the “classical” pieces are significant for having been arranged from the original to allow for greater accessibility for the everyday church congregation or community choir. A collection printed in 1947 entitled “Later Renaissance Motets,” for example, consists of pieces arranged simply and translated from the original German, and serves as an example of the historical effort to bring high art and music to society as a whole.

The collection is currently available for both browsing and circulation on tables—picnic style and by wonderful armloads—in the Music Library’s Listening Room, 2nd floor, Mugar Memorial Library.

–Lena Serpa, Genithia Hogges, Holly Mockovak
