Halloween, which dates back to Celtic rituals thousands of years ago, has long been associated with witches, ghosts and vampires. Today, Halloween has become a celebration characterized by child-friendly activities such as costumes, trick-or-treating and carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns. To help celebrate the holiday, we have compiled a few interesting Halloween-related numbers:

  • $9 billion: Total estimated spending for Halloween 2018 (National Retail Federation).
  • 41.1 million: The estimated number of potential trick-or-treaters in 2017 — children ages 5 to 14. (U.S. Census Bureau).
  • $86.79: Average amount that U.S. consumers are expected to spend on Halloween this year (NRF).
  • 175 million: Number of Americans planning to partake in Halloween festivities this year (NRF).

According to the National Retail Federation, the most popular children’s costumes this year are expected to be princesses, superheroes, witches, and ghosts. Adults are planning to dress up as witches, vampires, zombies and pirates. Twenty percent of consumers are expected to dress up their pets and some of the top costumes will include pumpkin, hot dog, bumblebee and devil.
