This classic work--often referred to as Merriam--describes the content of nearly 400 authentic recordings on 70 labels. Its most useful aspect is the 18 detailed indexes offering addtional teminology to aid finding recordings of the represented instruments, languages, geographic areas, stylistic characteristics, and traditional type or purpose of songs or instrumental music. Use this as a locator tool to further search for recordings within the music library collection, within online audio subscription, the WorldCat, etc

Another classic work, often referred to as ILAM--for International Library of African Music--these volumes give recording and content details of the Sound of Africa Series which series title was cited but not detailed in Merriams' African Music on LP. Most of the ILAM recordings now stream online in Smithsonian Global Sound. Use the print volumes to identify specific recordings or, once online, browse by label and choose ILAM.

Volume 1 is devoted to the African continent through an ethnomusicological overview and featuring profiles of issues and case studies. The print version has an accompanying CD; the audio tracks are included in the online version. version.

--The historic Sound of Africa Series, also known ILAM ( the International Library of African Music), and originally released on 210 LP discs, recorded and compiled 1930-1970 by Hugh Tracey. In addition to online availability now, the recordings were originally described and indexed in detail in a two-volume set published in 1973 [Music Reference X ML 156.4 P7 T7] and browsing through these volumes is recommended. The Sound of Africa/ILAM series covered central, eastern and southern regions.
--The original Folkways recordings. Approximately 50 LP recordings mostly captured between 1950 and 1965. Ethnic and traditional music, international in scope; includes some spoken word, also documents some natural and mechanical (man-made) sound. Sort by language, region, genre, and more. Much of the online subscription also resides in CD form, with the notes, at the Music Library.
