Zoology

Zoology is the scientific study of animals.

This guide is designed to be a finding aid for information related to Zoology targeted toward Boston University faculty, staff, and students. It includes both print and online materials. Annotation is provided in instances where the resource title is ambiguous. The guide is not comprehensive. If you need assistance locating these or any other sources, please contact the Science and Engineering Library reference department.

ASFA 1: Biological Sciences and Living Resources   1971+
Citations with abstracts to journal articles, books, reports, conference
proceedings, and translations dealing with the aquatic sciences. Input to ASFA is provided by a growing international network of information centers monitoring over 5,000 serial publications, books, reports, conference proceedings, translations and limited distribution literature.

BIOSIS  (Biological Abstracts)   1989+
This database consists of citations with abstracts to articles in over 7,000 life science journals worldwide and is very comprehensive across all of the life sciences.

Biological and Agricultural Index Full Text 1994+
This database include the core literature of biology and agriculture.

Birds of North America
Comprehensive reference covering the life histories of North American birds including image and video galleries and bird call recordings.

General Science Full Text   (WilsonWeb)   1984+
Citations, with abstracts, to journal articles selected from close to 200
English-language core and popular journals covering all science disciplines.
Includes access to the full text of articles for 25% of the journals.

PrimateLit 1940+
This database provides bibliographic access to the scientific literature on nonhuman primates for the research and educational communities. Coverage of the database includes all publication categories (articles, books, abstracts, technical reports, dissertations, book chapters, etc.) and many subject areas (behavior, colony management, ecology, reproduction, field studies, disease models, veterinary science, psychology, physiology, pharmacology, evolution, taxonomy, developmental and molecular biology, genetics and zoogeography).

Web of Science 1973+
Offering an electronic version of Science Citation Index, this database
covers articles in all areas of the sciences and enables users to search current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 8,500 of the most prestigious, high impact research journals in the world. Its most unique feature is the
ability to search for cited references in journal articles.

Wildlife and Ecology Studies WorldWide 1935+
This database offers a large index to literature on wild mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Topics covered include behavior, endangered/threatened species, habitat, disturbances, genetics, life history, physiology, morphology, pollution, and management.

This web site aims to become a clearinghouse of data concerning amphibians (frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders) and their population deteriorations worldwide by collecting pertinent information about them.

Animal Diversity Web
This web site is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology.

Biodiversity (Australian Department of the Environment and Heritage)
This web site provides very extensive coverage of broad topics related to biodiversity including biodiversity hotspots, international issues, invasive species, migratory species, ecological communities, and wildlife trade.

Biodiversity Hotspots
This web site focuses on 25 critically threatened ecosystems, or hotspots. The intention is to categorize and prioritize areas on all continents where biodiversity is at greatest risk and provide information about them for the purposes of planning and decision-making. For each of the hotspots, there is information about threatened and endangered plant and vertebrate species from the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List, along with an ecosystem description, commentary about unique biodiversity and human impacts, details about conservation action, related links, a bibliography for further reading, and an outline map.

This site provies a large number of links to many topics realted to questions of biodiversity in the U.S., Canada, and other part of the world.

Electronic Zoo
Categorizes and lists many web sites on animals covering everything from animal taxonomic groups to fictional animals to career information for would-be vets.

Entomology Database Library (National Museum of Natural History (NMNH))
This web site contains a wealth of information about entomology at NMNH: curated specimens, staff, history, organization, literature, etc., in searchable categories. It provides digitized access to NMNH entomology work, products, and personnel.

FishBase
This is an information system with key data on the biology of all fishes including population dynamics, taxonomy, conservation, physiology, ecology, and genetics.

Integrated Taxonomic Information System
Web site for authoritative taxonomic information on plants, animals, and microbes of the world.

Internet Resource Guide for Zoology
This web site works as a guide to finding zoology related information on the internet.

This extremely specialized Web site is based on a database containing the mollusk collection at the Field Museum of Chicago.

Organization that works to advance knowledge of birds and their habitat.

The Crustacean Society
Society working to advance the study of all aspects of the biology of the Crustacea by promoting the exchange and dissemination of information throughout the world.

Herpetologists' League
International organization devoted to studying the biology of amphibians and reptiles.

International Fund for Animal Welfare
This organization works to prevent cruelty to animals and protect wild animals and their habitats.
