Bloomberg Certification Program

The Frederic S. Pardee Management Library currently provides students access to the Bloomberg Certification Program at Boston University. 

The Bloomberg Certification program, designed for finance professionals, is a two track program designed to equip users with the necessary skills to become proficient in the use of the Bloomberg Professional service.  The program offers structured training on Bloomberg functionality in Fixed Income and Equity.  The Certification Program, recognized world wide, will signal to prospective employers that you have attained a high level of competency in using the Bloomberg Professional Service as well as optimize job performance.

General

  • Program enrollment: To sign up for the program you must register with Pardee Library at pardstf@bu.edu.
  • Prerequisite/requirements:  Participation or enrollment in Portfolio Finance, MSIM, EMBA, Humphrey Fellowship or doctoral program, MBA students, Mathematical Finance students, faculty, and qualified Finance major undergraduates.
  • Charge:  This program is free of charge to BU students.

  • Time: Students can work the program on their own pace. Program participants must sign up to book the Bloomberg terminal and can do so up to one week in advance by e-mailing pardstf@bu.edu or at Pardee's Reference Desk. Program participants can book one 1 hour session per day.
  • Library Hours: Be sure to check library hours before you drop in. If you come before or after Reference Desk hours, remember to consult the sign up sheet for Bloomberg located at the Reference Desk.    

Bloomberg User ID & Equipment

  • Bloomberg User ID: You must create your own Bloomberg user ID and login. To do so from the Bloomberg terminal type in UREG <GO>.  You will have to speak with Bloomberg Customer service during this process to validate your user name and id so please have a cell phone with you.
  • Equipment: You must supply your own head set.

Classes

  • Two tracks are available Equity and Fixed Income. Students can complete one or both tracks.
  • All students must complete the 3 class Introductory Session prior to beginning a track.
  • Each track consists of 5 classes.
  • Class videos are viewed from the Bloomberg terminal located in the Pardee Library.  Type in BU <GO> Choose 9) BU Interactive then choose your track, Equity or Fixed Income, then choose the class you want to view.
  • Courses are progressive and should be taken in order.
  • Print a copy of each class hand out prior to beginning the class.  GO to DOCS <GO>, search using your course code, i.e. E101, choose the course guide in the language you need, choose download pdf. The pdf's will download to the My Documents folder on the computer. Write down the 7 digit document code in the upper right hand corner of the download screen. This will be the name of the downloaded file (i.e. 2029732 for Getting Started). Then print the document to the printer attached to the Bloomberg terminal.
  • A set of Electives are offered which are not required for graduation from the program but can be used as a replacement course if you fail one of the original 5 track courses.

Exams

  • Each class is followed by a multiple choice exam requiring a 70% passing grade in order to qualify for the certificate program.  You must pass 8 courses for both fixed income & equity (3 intro and 5 track courses). If you fail one of theses classes you have the option to take any elective courses until you have passed a total of 8 courses.
  • Exams run between 10 and 15 questions, depending on the track and average about 30 minutes each.
  • Bloomberg will provide you with a course completion code at the end of each class video.  Write down this code then contact Bloomberg by typing CERT <GO> choose option 3) Contact us.  Request access to an exam by listing your course code (i.e. E101) and your completion code (i.e. 138934).  Once Bloomberg authorizes access to the exam type CERT <GO> choose option 2) Exams to begin the exam.
  • Your exam grade will immediately appear upon completion of the exam.
  • Bloomberg will not authorized access to exams unless you view the class.
  • Once you begin an exam it is recommend that you complete it within 24 hours.

Certificates

  • To request certificates send a message to the Bloomberg Help Desk by typing CERT <GO> and selecting "contact us" to request your certificate. Please specify EQ, FI or both.
  • Certificates will be issued upon completion of the Introduction and 5 courses of the track you have chosen.
  • Upon earning a certificate, and with your permission, this information will be added to your Bloomberg Profile under Education.
  • Paper certificates are mailed within 4-6 weeks after completion of a track.
