Dictionaries & Encyclopediæ

For dictionaries of specific languages, please see the Languages section.

The Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics. 1994.
The long signed entries in this ten-volume set are arranged alphabetically and include articles on individual languages, linguistics and linguists; each entry concludes with a bibliography. The last volume contains a glossary, a list of languages of the world, and name and subject indices. (Mugar Reference X P29 E48 1994).
The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Language. 1997.
Organized in eleven parts, this resource contains sixty-five thematic sections covering most linguistic fields and themes. There are many illustrations, some in colour. It includes a glossary, "table of the world's languages," a bibliography and useful indices. (Mugar Reference X P29 C64 1997)
Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Sciences of Language. 1979.
Translated from the French Dictionnaire encyclopedique des sciences du langage (Mugar P29 D8) and updated by Catherine Porter, this dictionary written by theorists Ducrot and Todorov offers fifty detailed articles on broad topics. The articles are arranged by catagory (i.e. "Schools," "Fields," "Methdological Concepts," etc.); each article concludes with a bibliography. The 800 terms defined within the articles are indexed at the end of the volume. (Mugar Reference X P29 D813)
Dictionary of Languages. 1998.
Over 400 languages are listed in this book, in alphabetical order. For each entry, the number of speakers and the geographical area in which the language is spoken is given. Often an example of the script or the language is included. The index is useful, as some individual languages are discussed under the heading for their language family. (Mugar Reference X P29 D35 1998).
A Dictionary of Grammatical Terms in Linguistics. 1993.
The over 1,5000 definitions in this dictionary concentrate on syntax and morphology. While some theoretical constructs have been included, the majority of the terms are descriptive. Examples and pronunciations are also given, and there are extensive cross references. The work concludes with a useful bibliography. (Mugar Reference X P152 T7 1993)
Literary, Rhetorical, and Linguistics Terms Index. 1983.
Based on over 17,000 "citations of special words or phrases within certain disciplines," this source indicates where definitions of the words indexed may be found (7). This is less a source for finding the definition of a word, than for understanding how a given word is used in different disciplines. Mugar holds twelve of the seventeen reference works indexed herein. (Mugar Reference X P29.5 U72 1983)
Random House American Sign Language Dictionary. 1994.
This dictionary provides the signs in ASL (described both pictorally and in words) for over 7,000 words and phrases. (Mugar Reference X HV2475 C667 1994)
International Encyclopedia of Linguistics. 1992.
These four volumes contain 750 articles on major fields of linguistics and languages (living and extinct), as well as entries for individual linguists. Each long signed article concludes with a bibliography. The final volume contains a glossary and a detailed index, as well as a "synoptic outline of contents," which groups entries by topic areas, languages of the world, and language families and areas. (Mugar Reference X P29 I58 1992)
International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences. 1968-1991.
The signed, comprehensive and authoritative --if a bit dated-- articles on language and linguistics (volume IX of the nineteen), include perception, componential analysis, semantics and semiotics. There is an extensive bibliography at the end of each article. The biographical supplement (volume XVIII) and the individual volumes contain lengthy biographies on a few linguists. (Mugar Reference X H40 F68)

Linguistic Cultures of the World 1997
Rather than statistics on languages spoken, this resource gives statistics about cultural resources, mineral resources, land resources, etc. broken down by language group. It is a part of the Cross-Cultural Statistical Encyclopedia of the World series. There are three indices at the end: countries, linguistic groups, subjects. (Mugar Reference X P35 P29 1997)
