Publishing Opportunities for Faculty

Faculty seeking information on where to publish their books and/or journal articles can search the Internet for a multitude of online resources.   Nevertheless,  a Google search using common keywords  (“publishing”, “book”, “manuscripts”) or other pertinent terms will yield a staggering number of hits, making the search unwieldy and often frustrating.
This brief guide to mostly online and some print sources may, we hope, greatly reduce the amount of time and effort required to locate submission requirements of book publishers and academic journals that publish in multidisciplinary and/or specific subject areas.

Academic Book Publishers

Published by the Association of Academic University Presses, the AAUP directory is a unique and essential first source: the opening pages provide a grid of publishers and subject interests, indicating those most likely to publish a work in a given subject area and providing quick access to the main text.  The directory offers detailed information on the member presses, series and subseries, and guidelines for submitting manuscripts.
Unfortunately, only a print edition is currently available; the title is shelved in the Mugar reference section.

Other more general suggestions:

  • Find a book title covering similar subject area and check the acknowledgments page for the name of the editor.
  • Do a keyword search in one of our subject databases and see whether there have been other books or journal articles published on the subject.
  • In WorldCat, use the Advanced Search screen and type in the name of  a topic, e.g., McCarthyism, to find out what books have been published on this topic.
