Companion to Literary Myths, Heroes and Archetypes
Pierre Brunel, editor. 1995
Majority of entries are for the name of the character or hero although thematic
and geographical entries are included. All entries are signed. Volume concludes

Goddesses in World Mythology

Lists goddesses alphabetically by geographical region. Each entry provides a
description of the goddess, culture of origin, bibliographical references, and
any alternate forms of the goddess' name. Indexes are by name or attribute.
Mythology of All Races

Each of the thirteen volumes is devoted to one or two different mythological
systems, grouped geographically. The library lacks volumes one and thirteen in
this edition
although
both are available in the 1916 set which is located in the Mugar Memorial Library
stacks (BL25 .M8).

Collection of essays dealing with mythology. Not comprehensive in scope but
provides an introduction to mythology. Arranged geographically. All essays
are signed and include a bibliography. An index is included in the second volume.
Who's Who in Egyptian Mythology

Concise entries for ancient Egyptian deities, mummies, pyramids, and other aspects
of Egyptian civilization. There is a chronology of Egyptian dynasties and an
annotated bibliography.

This source is primarily useful for browsing. Entries are
followed by concise definitions or longer detailed essays
and are listed by the most common English spelling. Covers
mythology from ancient Near East to the present. Includes
an annotated bibliography, indexes, and a key to variant
spellings.
Legends of the Earth, Sea, and Sky: an encyclopedia of nature
myths

Entries include natural forces, deities of natural forces, terms related to the
myths of natural forces, and broad geographical areas. References follow each
entry and most entries discuss how the term is connected to myths of various

Classical Dictionary of Hindu Mythology and Religion, Geography,
History, and Literature

Focuses primarily on mythology but includes religious references. Most entries
are brief. Works by European scholars exceed those from the Sanskrit literature.
Indexes are in Sanskrit and other languages. A transliteration and pronunciation
guide is included at the beginning of the work.
Classical Myths and Legends in the Middle Ages and Renaissance:
a dictionary of allegorical meanings
H. David Brumble. 1998
Focuses on the allegorical traditions of Greek and Roman mythology in the works
of medieval and Renaissance writers. Most entries are 1-2 pages in length but
entries vary from a few sentences to 13 pages (Hercules). Most entries include
quotations and cross-references. There are also annotated and unannotated bibliographies
provided for further research at the end of the work as well as brief bibliographies
after each entry.
Dictionary of Ancient Near Eastern Mythology

The dictionary is primarily focused on narratives and deities that are more widely
known. Entries are followed by references to texts listed in the bibliography
at the end of the volume. Includes a chronological chart, a glossary of geographic
terms, an index, and illustrations.

This dictionary has a broad thematic and geographical scope. Most entries have
references. Introduction provides an overview of Celtic culture and religion.

Covers geographical regions from northern Mexico to the Arctic Circle. Most entries
include references and all entries indicate tribal origin of the myth or figure.
There are extensive cross references to assist the user in locating information.
The volume concludes with a tribal index.

This is a translation of Lexikon der germanischen Mythologie. Covers mythology
and religion of all the Germanic tribes and includes the Eddas, the great sagas
of Norse mythology. Some entries are followed by references to the secondary
literature. There is an extensive bibliography at the end of the volume.
Dictionary of Polynesian Mythology
Robert D. Craig. 1989
Focuses primarily on deities but includes some references to legendary heroes
of Polynesia. Introduction provides a broad overview of Polynesian history and
sources. Short source citations follow each main entry with more complete bibliographical
information following after that. Volume concludes with an appendix of categories
of deities and a general index.

Gods, Demons, and Symbols of Ancient Mesopotamia: an illustrated
dictionary

Entries are listed under the Sumerian form of the name/term with cross references
to the Akkadian. Introduction provides an overview of Mesopotamian culture. A

Oxford Classical Dictionary

This one-volume classic contains over 6,200 entries on both Greek and Roman aspects
of literature, myth, religion, philosophy, and much more. Now in its third edition,
many small corrections have been made. In regard to mythology, this work has
entries covering astrology, magic, rituals, sacred buildings and more.
Women of Classical Mythology: a biographical dictionary

Lists women or groups of women treated in classical mythology (goddesses, heroines,
and monstrous beings). Most entries include citations and cross references. A
table of related male characters can be found in the appendix.

this index (1926, 1937, and 1952) are located only at the Educational Resources
Library. The next four volumes are located in Mugar.
Mythical and Fabulous Creatures: a sourcebook and research
guide

Describes fabulous creatures and their appearance in history, literature, art,
folklore, and myth. Limited to twenty specific creatures divided in four sections:
birds and beasts; human-animal composites; creatures of darkness; giants and
fairies. Glossary follows the introduction with brief definitions of some of
the more important creatures. Second part of volume discusses 145 creatures
in five categories not mentioned previously: human-animal combinations; fabulous
animals; fabulous peoples and creatures with human-like appearances; creatures
with a makeup different from the previous groupings; and creatures with a variety
of forms. All major essays are signed.
