Training & Orientation Programs for Visiting and Transfer Students

Optional Library Tours

Library tours are designed to familiarize new students with library and computer locations, services, and more. If you are interested in a library tour, please contact Raquel Ortiz, rmortiz@bu.edu.

Library Copy Card

Every J.D. student will be receiving two cards with 250 copies each. The first card was distributed with your registration materials. You may pick up the second card at the Annex Circulation Desk once the first is used or when you are unable to complete a print job. This card is good for copying and printing throughout the law library and in the Law Tower 3rd floor computer labs.

Wireless Network

The Law School is part of the University's wireless network. At the law school, you may use the wireless connection throughout the law tower and the law library annex. If you already have a wireless card, you will need to configure your laptop for the wireless network and for wireless printing. Staff at the computer services help desk, room 1770, will be on hand to help you configure your laptop during posted hours.

The library's computer services page has self-help instructions for wireless configurations and a self-extracting program for wireless printer setup.

LexisNexis and Westlaw Passwords

These passwords will replace those from your institution, so please pick these up at the Reference Desk, 2nd floor of the Law Tower, at your earliest convenience. Our Important Lexis and Westlaw Information sheet provides names and contact information for staff who can answer your technical and/or research questions about the services.

Lexis passwords will not work unless registered and Westlaw passwords will expire if not registered within 30 days after the first use. Registration takes only a few minutes. If you have any trouble with or questions about the registration process, please stop by the Reference Desk for assistance.

Research and Reference Services

The reference librarians have law degrees as well as library school degrees. Our reference desk is staffed 7 days a week, 7 or more hours a day:

Monday-Thursday 8:30am-8pm
Friday 8:30am-5pm
Saturday 9am-5pm
Sunday 12pm-8pm

Reference librarians can help you navigate our collection and will answer questions about the many legal and non-legal resources at your disposal. We look forward to meeting and working with you!

The law school and the university subscribe to hundreds of databases that provide legal and non-legal information. We invite you to explore the vast collection of databases and research guides provided by the Pappas Law Library. Most of the databases are available for home use.

The reference department provides over 250 training sessions a year on print and electronic resources for legal and non-legal research. A full schedule of training sessions is available on the room 312 and room 334 training lab calendars.
