BU Catalog: Status Explanations

The following explanations are provided to assist you in understanding how Law Library Staff process your request. The other libraries on campus follow the same general procedures, but may require more or less time depending on the volume of requests received. If you are referred to another BU library for materials, we encourage you to ask a staff member at the circulation desk about their timeframes.

Available:

Patrons are expected to check the shelf before requesting these materials. If you do not find the material, please request a SEARCH. The library's staff will look for the materials and contact you with the results. When the material is NOT found, staff update the status of the material in the library catalog to On Search. Searches are conducted Tuesday through Saturday at the law library and you should expect to receive results within 3 days of placing your request. We currently find over 80% of the materials requested with this status.

For Law materials fill out the Material Request Form. For other BU libraries' materials please check at the circulation desk for the appropriate form.

On loan - overdue:

These materials are overdue and have not been returned by the current borrower. The borrower has been contacted and the material will be reviewed for replacement.

Members of the BU Law Community should fill out the Material Request Form. Law library staff will process an interlibrary loan request and attempt to borrow the material from another library.

Patrons who are NOT part of the BU Law Community should check with the interlibrary loan department of their school/college for alternative borrowing.

Missing:

These materials have been searched by library staff multiple times and are currently being reviewed by the library's Selection Committee.

Members of the BU Law Community should fill out the Material Request Form. Law library staff will process an interlibrary loan request for you and attempt to borrow the material from another library.

Patrons who are NOT part of the BU Law Community should check with the interlibrary loan department of their school/college for alternative borrowing.

On loan until:

The loan periods for library materials are determined by each library based on past usage and differ for patrons with different needs. However; every patron, regardless of status, is only guaranteed a two week loan if the material is requested by another patron. All BU libraries RECALL materials.

If you need to use law library materials that are currently checked out, please fill out the Material Request Form. We will email the current borrower and adjust their due date. The catalog will be updated to On loan until : (new date). Currently law library recalls are returned by the new due date over 95% of the time. Most of these are returned within 5 days of the email.

Patrons who are part of the BU Law Community should fill out the Material Request Form for ALL materials with a Due status, regardless of the owning library. Law library staff will check to see if another member of the BU Law Community has the material and will contact them. If we find the current borrower is NOT part of the BU Law Community, staff will contact you to place a RECALL at the library that owns the material. By agreement the law library cannot officially recall materials owned by other BU libraries and the catalog will not be updated to reflect either the new due date or the Hold Status.

Patrons who are NOT part of the BU Law Community should fill out the Material Request Form for LAW materials only. For other BU libraries' materials please check at the circulation desk for the appropriate form.

On Order:

These materials have been ordered by the library, but not received. They are not yet considered to be part of the library's collection.

Members of the BU Law Community should fill out the Material Request Form. Library staff will process an interlibrary loan request for you and attempt to borrow the material from another library. Please note: Some libraries will not lend newly published materials via interlibrary loan.

Patrons who are NOT part of the BU Law Community should check with the interlibrary loan department of their school/college for alternative borrowing.

On Hold Shelf:

These materials are currently being held for another patron. If you need to use these materials, please speak with a library staff member.

The law library allows you to use the material in the library, provided we can locate you if the patron with the hold comes to retrieve the book. If you need the material for a longer period of time, you should fill out a Material Request Form. The patron who currently has the hold will be limited to a two week loan and the library will hold the book for you when it is returned.
