User Services: Borrowing Books
Materials marked in the back of the book as Limited Circulation, Library Use Only, or Non-Circulating must be used where they are shelved; these include journals, looseleaf services, reference materials, and primary sources.
Reserve materials may be borrowed for two hours for use within the library. Current BU Law students may borrow Course Reserve materials for use outside of the library (2 hours) and overnight. Overnight loaning begins two hours before the library closes. Books are due back to the library one hour after opening.
All members of the BU community may borrow items from the circulating law treatise collections for an initial loan period of 4 weeks.
All circulating materials may be renewed if not requested by other patrons.
Renewals should be requested in person at the Fineman Circulation desk. Please note heavily requested items cannot be renewed.
Renewals can be obtained:
- in person at the Fineman or Annex circulation desks,
- through the My Account page at BU Libraries Search (sign-in required),
- or by phoning the Annex circulation desk at (617) 353-2848 - staff will need your BU ID number when you call.
Late Returns and Replacement Costs
Users who have overdue law material will receive email notices from library staff requesting the return of the material. If you receive an overdue email from the library, please respond to it promptly. Materials returned to the law library within 3 weeks of an overdue notice are NOT subject to fines. Materials returned more than 3 weeks after the notice are subject to a minimum replacement charge of $130 per item (non-refundable after the library has ordered a replacement for the material).
Overdue Reserve materials are requested back and billed in a shorter period of time.
Users that have material with a status of BILLED may not borrow any additional materials from the law library.
Please contact us immediately if you do not have the material listed in an overdue notice. Even if you are positive that the material was returned, our records still indicate that the material is checked out to you.
Users receive notices regarding overdue materials, materials requested by other patrons, responses to search and/or recall materials, and just before graduation as a reminder of currently checked out materials which should be returned to the library. Notices are delivered to your BU email from all BU libraries.
Please contact the library that sent the notice immediately if you do not have the material listed. Even if you are positive that the material was returned, library records still indicate that the material is checked out to you.
