How to Prepare Your Note, Cert. or Seminar Paper

First, you must select a topic for your paper or note. Be sure it is an original topic by conducting a preemption check. When you begin your research, you will want to consult secondary sources as well as primary sources. Then, you will need to update your research.

This road map addresses U.S. legal research. Guides for Foreign Legal Research and International Legal Research are available from the Pappas Law Library.

There are also books on scholarly legal writing that may be helpful in determining form and style for your paper. For examples of scholarly writing by law students, be sure to examine law review and law journal notes or comments.

For in depth assistance researching your chosen topic, make an appointment with a reference librarian. For detailed information about the Upperclass Writing Requirement, see the Registrar's web page.
