Federal Law Research Guide
Federal legal research involves primary legal sources such as statutes, cases, and administrative law. To ascertain legislative intent behind a particular statute, you will need to conduct legislative history research.
Bear in mind that most legal research should begin with a review of secondary sources such as treatises and law review articles. Secondary sources help you frame your questions before you begin researching "the law" and often provide references to primary sources, rules, or forms.
A note about online sources: Due to license restrictions, the law library can only provide access to LexisNexis and Westlaw for current law school students, faculty, and staff.
