Agency Information

History

• Established in 1989 by Financial Institutions Regulatory Reform and Enforcement Act as part of the Treasury Department.
• Thrifts are savings associations and savings and loan holding companies
• The Director of OTS is appointed to a five year term by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate

Functions

• Serves as the primary regulator of all federal and many state-chartered thrift institutions
