Collection Policy: Selection Standards

E. Newspapers

Online access to many current newspapers is freely available through publisher websites.  For historical research in newspapers and magazines of general interest, the library increasingly relies on campus collections of databases and digital archives. Databases are also increasingly relied on for legal newspapers. Online access is preferred for newsletters of all types.

However, due to user preference and non-inclusion of some parts of print editions appearing in the databases, the library maintains print and microform subscriptions to selected major national, local, and legal newspapers. The library relies on Mugar Library and/or the Boston Public Library to collect other national, state and local newspapers. The library does not maintain paper indexes since our newspaper collection can be searched in Westlaw or Lexis, or through other licensed databases.

Additional subscriptions of legal newspapers may be obtained for routing to multiple faculty and administrators. Individual offices pay for their copies of newspapers.
