Message from the Director
Dear Prospective Student,
Welcome to BU Law's Summer Legal Institute.
For today's global "transactional" lawyer, interpreting contracts from an American and common law perspective is an essential skill in international settings. The most effective cross-border lawyers are those who can handle critical drafting problems in international agreements and skillfully negotiate the most important provisions to serve a client's interests in a transaction. The challenge is that the drafting and negotiating takes places in English -- and requires engaging with lawyers from other countries and legal systems. An ability to overcome language and cultural barriers is a must in order to deliver successful legal and business solutions to a client.
BU Law's Summer Legal Institute Program in "Legal English and Global Business Transactions" is a three-week program uniquely designed to train lawyers in mastering these skills. It provides practical training in the contractual aspects of international business transactions and in use of legal English, both in written and oral communications. It is designed for lawyers, advanced law students law students, and business professionals who work with lawyers, educated outside the United States who seek intensive training in:
