Summer Legal Institute Banner

BU Law's Summer Legal Institute (SLI) in London is being redesigned for summer 2016 and will therefore not take place in summer 2015. For the past 12 years, SLI has trained hundreds of lawyers in the skills and competencies needed for cross-border work, including in the all-important area of Legal English communication skills. In 2014, the Institute's program, “Legal English and Transnational Legal Practice: Drafting and Negotiating International Commercial Agreements,” featured a unique, integrated approach to teach the language and legal skills that are essential for foreign lawyers to handle business agreements in English. In small class settings, students received hands-on instruction from BU Law faculty members and from Legal English instructors from Boston University's Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP).

We will continue with this tradition in summer 2016 with a new program of study for lawyers seeking to enhance their global lawyering skills. This new course may be delivered at our London Center, or at other Boston University centers around the world. If you wish to receive information on BU Law's short-term course offerings , please fill out our SLI information form. To assist with our curricular planning, we would also welcome hearing from you on any specific training needs you have; simply include these training needs in the comments section of the form.

Message from the Director

John N. Riccardi, Assistant Dean for Graduate and International Programs, Director, LL.M. in American Law Program

Dear Prospective Student,

Welcome to BU Law's Summer Legal Institute!

For today's global "transactional" lawyer, interpreting contracts from an American and common law perspective is an essential skill in international settings. The most effective transnational lawyers are those who can handle critical drafting problems in international agreements and skillfully negotiate the most important provisions to serve a client's interests in a transaction.  The challenge is that the drafting and negotiating takes places in English -- and requires engaging with lawyers from other countries and legal systems. Overcoming language and cultural barriers is a must in order to deliver successful legal and business solutions to a client.

BU Law's Summer Legal Institute Program in "Legal English and Transnational Legal Practice" is a three-week program uniquely designed to train lawyers in mastering these skills.  It provides practical training in the contractual aspects of international commercial agreements and in use of Legal English, both in written and oral communications.   It is designed for lawyers, advanced law students, and business professionals, educated outside the United States who seek intensive training in:

  • Communicating effectively in Legal English, both orally and in writing, when handling business deals in international settings;
  • Structuring and drafting transnational commercial agreements in English;
  • Negotiating the key contract provisions that impact the outcome of cross-border commercial agreements; and
  • Resolving and enforcing international business disputes through mediation, arbitration, and litigation.

Boston University is proud to deliver this unique, innovative and practical program.  Over the past decade, we have educated hundreds of foreign-trained lawyers through our Summer Legal Institute, combining the best of BU Law's award-winning classroom instruction with the expertise of ESL professionals from BU's Center for English Language and Orientation Programs, world renowned for its Legal English programming.

The program's tuition includes Boston University-provided housing in one of London's most exclusive neighborhoods, South Kensington, set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most dynamic and historic cities.

Through these web pages, I hope you'll get a good sense of the valuable, practical training – and career enhancing learning – you can expect to gain from this summer's program.

We look forward to seeing you in London!
