Message from the Director

Ian C. Pilarczyk

Welcome to the Legal English Certificate Program at BU Law!

Designed in two tracks, BU Law's program is a colloborative effort between BU Law and BU's Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP), both of whom have decades of experience in improving students' English and Legal English proficiency. Together, we are welcoming students from countries that include Saudi Arabia, China, Armenia, Korea, Kuwait, Taiwan, Thailand, and Turkey.

Track one of the Legal English Certificate Program (LECP), the Two Year LL.M. Program, is designed for qualified lawyers who are competitive candidates to one of BU Law's LL.M. programs but do not meet our English proficiency requirements for admission. Having been conditionally admitted into one of our LL.M. programs (the American Law Program, Banking and Financial Law, Graduate Tax Program, Intellectual Property, or the Executive LL.M. Program), students will take a year-long program of English and Legal English study that will improve their writing, reading and speaking skills while also providing them with the background they need to succeed at the LL.M. level. Our program has been carefully-designed to provide a comprehensive, graduated and immersive learning experience, in which students receive a great deal of personal attention, written feedback, and the vocabulary, knowledge and skills they need to perform well in an English-language LL.M. program.

Track two, the Certificate-only program, also provides students with a similar opportunity to greatly improve their English language skills, designed for those students who are not going on to do an LL.M. program at BU. Perfect for non-lawyers, spouses and partners of students in the Boston area, or lawyers who are not planning on LL.M. studies, the program structure is very similar to the Two Year LL.M. Program. Successful completion of either program will result in the Legal English Certificate from Boston University School of Law, a professional credential that will be recognized around the world.

Boston University is a great place to learn, and Boston is a great place to live. I believe that you will find the Legal English Certificate Program is the perfect place to advance your academic and professional career. I invite you to explore our website in more detail, and also to contact us at bullm@bu.edu with any questions. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

asdf
