Why did you choose to work with one of the clinics? And why did you choose the Criminal Law Clinic?

Before coming to BU Law, I worked for almost four years as a police officer in New York City. Participating in the Criminal Law Clinic allowed me to learn even more about the criminal justice system by gaining practical courtroom experience as a student prosecutor.

What was the first time you had to speak in front of a court like, and how did you build confidence over time?

Although I was nervous, I built confidence prior to the court appearance through an enormous amount of preparation. Obviously, more court appearances over time made speaking in court easier.

Did you work as a defender or prosecutor? Why did you choose this role?

I chose to be a student prosecutor because of my interest and prior experience in law enforcement.

What was your most memorable case, and why?

My most memorable case dealt with a defendant charged with possession of stolen goods. After interviewing the officers involved with the defendant's arrest and the stolen goods' owner, we were able to develop enough evidence to initiate an investigation into the defendant's role in the actual burglary.

Why is it important to represent cases pro bono?

Many view the legal profession as entirely profit-driven. Performing substantive work pro bono can teach both law students and our clients that there is more to the legal profession than money.

What did you gain from participating in the program?

Without question, I obtained practical courtroom experience that no classroom exercise could compare with. In fact, I was lucky enough to bring a case to trial.

What advice would you give to incoming students curious about the clinical programs?

Any law student who desires to get out of the classroom, into the courtroom and actively participate in the legal process should consider joining a clinic.
