Why did you choose to work with one of the clinics? And why did you choose the externship program?

There were several reasons why I chose to work with one of the clinics. One, it granted me an opportunity to gain practical experience—experience that I could not attain in the classroom. Two, it was an added opportunity to explore a particular area of the law. Three, it allowed me to further determine what my interests are, with respect to the law. I chose to work with the externship program specifically because there were so many options and opportunities available—the possibilities were nearly limitless.

What was your externship placement and your role there?

I interned at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. My role varied by week or by day. I had the typical research and writing assignments, but I also had an investigatory role in several cases and was able to play a role in the mediation process, as well.

What was your most memorable experience in your placement, and why?

My most memorable experience was most definitely being able to partake in mediation, because I got to witness the 'real' human aspect of the law coming into play—it is that element of humanity that brought me to the law in the first place.

What did you gain from participating in the program?

My externship experience afforded me practical experience, a more rounded legal education, a better understanding of my personal interests in the law, and specific experience in employment law.

What advice would you give to incoming students curious about the clinical programs?

The experience you gain is entirely at your control—you're able to choose your own clinic or program, and you can solicit your advisor for the type of work that you would like to do. It's essentially an educational opportunity where you can dictate what you learn, experience and take away—something you can’t get in the classroom.
