Why did you choose to work with one of the clinics? And why did you choose the externship program?

I wanted to do something that would let me build on what I had learned during a year and a half of classes. I chose the externship program specifically because I was excited about experiencing an aspect of the profession that I might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience. During my 1L summer, I interned at the United States Attorney's Office in Boston. I decided to apply for internships with federal judges because I was interested in learning about the federal judicial system from a judge's perspective.

What was your externship placement and your role there?

I was a judicial intern for the Honorable Patti B. Saris, Federal District Court, District of Massachusetts.

What was your most memorable experience in your placement, and why?

One of my most memorable experiences was attending oral arguments about a motion for which I had written a bench memorandum. The memo was my major project for the semester, and I had been working on it for months. It was exciting to watch the attorneys respond to questions which I had identified as relevant. It also meant a lot to be a part of the process of evaluating the motions—from the time the attorneys' briefs arrived through oral arguments and the judge's ultimate decision.

I also enjoyed getting to work closely with Judge Saris' clerks. As recent law school graduates, they were always happy to share their insights and advice about the profession. I was really inspired by their dedication to their work and their passion for law and justice.

What did you gain from participating in the program?

I developed a deeper understanding of the litigation process, both civil and criminal. In addition, through feedback from the judge and clerks, I improved my research and writing skills. Perhaps most importantly, I had the opportunity to observe a part of the judicial system that few people ever get to see.

What are your plans after BU Law?

I plan to stay in Boston to work in commercial litigation. I'm particularly interested in government enforcement and complex civil litigation.

What advice would you give to incoming students curious about the clinical programs?

First, identify what you want to get out of the clinical program. Each program offers very different opportunities and requires different time commitments. If you're uncertain, talk to faculty and students who have participated in the programs. Then, when you start the program, be sure to get as deeply involved as possible. The semester goes very quickly when you're interning and taking classes, so take advantage of the opportunity right from the start.
